February Birthstone

The birthstone for the month of February is amethyst.

Amethyst is the purple, and likely the most valuable variety of quartz. The best amethysts are faceted, the rest are cut into cabochon stones.

The word amethyst means "not drunken" in Greek because it was believed to protect against intoxication. Many people used to wear amethyst as an amulet to protect against drunkeness. Many catholic chalices were actually decorated with amethysts.

Heat treatment can actually change the color of amethyst to yellows, reds, greens or colorless. X-ray radiation can then restore the original color.

Amethysts are formed in geodes, or spherical shaped rock formations with quartz deposited inside.

The most important deposits of amethyst are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Zamibia and Uruguay. But amethyst are also found in Burma, India, Canada, Mexico, Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka and the United States.
